Breaking Barriers: How Saraswati Das Built a Sustainable Future Through Goat Rearing

In the heart of Uttar Shoilomari village, Batiaghata Upazila, Khulna, a remarkable transformation took place. Saraswati Das, once burdened by financial struggles and an uncertain future, is now a self-sufficient entrepreneur. Thanks to the Development of Mohila Society (DMS) and its Free Goat Distribution Program, Saraswati has turned her life around and is now an inspiration for many.
A Life of Hardship
Born into a financially challenged family, Saraswati was forced to discontinue her education at the age of 15. Soon after, she was married off to Nitai Das, a local cobbler. With limited income, life became an uphill battle.
Within just three years, she became a mother of four children, one of whom was disabled. Her husband's earnings were too meager to support the growing family, and she was forced to work as a domestic helper to make ends meet. Despite her relentless efforts, putting food on the table and providing medical care for her disabled child seemed impossible.
A Ray of Hope: The Goat Rearing Initiative
Just when things seemed hopeless, Saraswati discovered the Free Goat Distribution Program by DMS, funded by the Bangladesh NGO Foundation. The program provided her with: ✅ Two goats free of cost ✅ Two days of intensive training on goat rearing ✅ Guidance on utilizing livestock for sustainable income
From Two Goats to a Thriving Business
What started as a gift of two goats quickly became a life-changing opportunity. Saraswati nurtured and took care of them with dedication. Over time, her herd grew from 2 to 8 goats. With the surplus milk production, she not only fulfilled her family’s nutritional needs but also started selling milk in the local market.
Achieving Financial Independence
With her newfound income, Saraswati was able to: ✔ Cover her children’s educational expenses ✔ Provide better healthcare for her disabled child ✔ Support her household without working as a maid ✔ Become a successful entrepreneur earning 2,000-3,000 BDT per month
