From Struggle to Success: Sakhina’s Inspiring Journey to Self-Sufficiency
Introduction
In a world where many women struggle to find financial stability, the story of Sakhina stands as a testament to the power of women’s empowerment, skill development, and financial independence. From being a struggling housewife to becoming a successful entrepreneur and mentor, Sakhina’s journey showcases how the Development of Mohila Society (DMS) is transforming lives through sustainable livelihood programs.
A Life of Hardship
Born in the village of Karikar in Damodar Union, Fultala Upazila, Khulna, Sakhina’s life was marked by hardships from a young age. Coming from a poor family, she had to abandon her education and was married off at just 14 years old to Abdul Halim, a day laborer. With limited income and growing responsibilities, life became increasingly difficult.
Within three years, Sakhina became a mother to three children, one of whom was disabled. Her husband’s meager earnings were insufficient to support the family, pushing her into extreme financial distress. To make ends meet, she took up domestic work in multiple households, yet the struggle continued. Providing for her children’s education and taking care of her disabled child seemed like an impossible dream—until she discovered DMS’s Free Sewing Machine Distribution and Training Program.
A Ray of Hope: Empowerment Through Skill Training
Funded by the Bangladesh NGO Foundation, this initiative by Development of Mohila Society (DMS) was designed to help underprivileged women acquire vocational skills and achieve economic independence. Sakhina enrolled in the three-month-long sewing training program, where she learned essential tailoring skills. Upon completing her training, she received a brand-new sewing machine free of cost, a tool that would change her life forever.
With determination and passion, she started sewing clothes for local women. Her expertise and hard work quickly gained recognition, and soon, women from Damodar Karikar village gathered at her home to learn sewing. She began mentoring other struggling women, empowering them with the same skills that transformed her life.
From Trainee to Trainer: A Leader in Her Community
Sakhina’s remarkable progress did not go unnoticed. Recognizing her dedication and talent, DMS selected her as a trainer in their 15th installment of the sewing training program. This promotion not only increased her financial stability but also gave her the chance to uplift other women in her community.
With a stable source of income, Sakhina could finally afford her children’s education, provide better care for her disabled child, and improve her family’s living conditions. Her earnings grew steadily, and today, she earns an average of 8,000 to 10,000 BDT per month—a remarkable achievement considering her past struggles.
A Success Story That Inspires Thousands
Sakhina’s story is more than just personal success; it’s an inspiration for countless women trapped in poverty and hardship. From working as a housemaid to becoming a self-sufficient entrepreneur and a mentor, she has proved that with the right support and opportunities, any woman can break free from the chains of poverty and build a better future.
